The Going Rate for Kids' Halloween Costumes

You can go simple, or pay extra for accessories—like princess tiaras or extra muscles for a Spiderman suit.

It’s that creepy, candy-seeking time of year, and because every little monster wants to dress as the ghoul of their dreams, we checked out a few places in the L.A. area to find the average price for a child’s Halloween costume.

Over at Halloween Adventure in Sherman Oaks, manager Debbie Swann said an 8-year-old can pick out a pirate or princess costume for an average price of $29.99. For that price, the costume will likely come with most accessories, she said. Costumes don’t usually include a mask unless the character is a superhero, she said.

The most popular kids' costumes this year are those Angry Birds and the Green Lantern, Swann said.

At Aahs! Gift Store in Sherman Oaks, kids' costumes range from $20 to $60, district manager Nitu Chopra said. The average price is about $35. That rate will usually include one or two accessories, like a badge and hat or a mask for Iron Man, he said. Expect the more expensive costumes to include more gear.

Chopra said the most popular kids' costumes this year include the Star Wars characters and the Angry Birds.

At Adele’s of Hollywood, the costume price depends on quality, manager Nadia Saidy said. The popular kids' costumes usually come in both economy and deluxe models with prices ranging from $29.99 to about $50. You can get the economy Spiderman or pay more for the deluxe look, which comes with more muscles, she said. The more expensive costumes have more elaborate parts.

As for popularity, Saidy said the Disney princesses are always a favorite for girls while boys still love the superheroes and pirates.

We saw a similar pricing model on the website for Ursula’s Costumes in Santa Monica. Here, you can get a simple angel, fairy or ballerina costume for $12.99 to $32.99 or you can dress your little candy-grabber in the “Enchanting Princess, Super Deluxe” costume, which includes a full-length satin and brocade ball gown, petticoat, fingerless long gloves, jeweled choker, sequined tiara and more for $102.

Ursula’s lists its kids' bestseller as the Tron Legacy, which costs $32.
