Thanksgiving Is Over: Let's Talk Mexican Restaurants

There are more than 10 businesses in Sherman Oaks that offer Mexican food. Which is your favorite? Tell us in the comments section below.

The most famous Mexican restaurant in the Valley is There's no denying the history and ambience at this 55-year-old-landmark.

Many of the most popular Mexican restaurants, like and, are on Ventura Boulevard.

Sherman Oaks Patch blogger Ellen Vukovich recommends La Fogata, at Van Nuys Boulevard and Moorpark Street.

My personal favorite Mexican food spot in Sherman Oaks is about two miles north of Ventura on Magnolia Boulevard. It's a tiny, five-table place called Deli Mex, and it's the best Mexican restaurant you never heard of.

10:04pm on Thursday, November 24, 2011 Unfortunately if you want to have great tasting Mexican food.. stay away from Ventura Blvd, just go East about 21 miles to east Los Angeles. NOT Casa Vega, Acapulco, or El Torito... Its Ameri-Mex Food for the gringo taste. Not the best or even second best...

Good comment. I agree, however with the price of gas so high..I'd like to dine in the neighborhood.

Here's two more I like.....Sol Y Luna in Tarzana is a family run restaurant with strolling mariachis, kitschy decor, tableside guacamole and excellent margaritas. Loteria Grill in Studio City is not your typical Mexican cuisine, but specializes in various regional cuisines, including delicious meat, chicken and vegetarians stew fillers for tacos and burritos. Chef /owner Jimmy Shaw is widely regarded as the best Mexican chef in L.A. Don't miss the Chicharron de queso (fried cheese), mole sauce (featured on HGTV's "The Best Thing I Ever Ate"), chile rellanos or the tamarind margarita. Oh, yeah...and I want to drink the salsa...it's that good!

P.S. Not quite Sherman Oaks, but just a few miles east and west. :)

Hands-down, our favorite place is Leonor's (there are two locations, one here in Sherman Oaks). It pleases the palette with its array of flavors, and unlike with other Mexican restaurants, one leaves feeling satisfied yet without that bogged-down, "uh-oh, here comes heartburn" feeling. It's a great, healthy choice for those of us who crave wholesome Mexican food!

Agree with Paul in his assessment of those places. Dreadful imitation of real Mexican food. Senor Fred locally is quite good as an alternative. Yet if I want something even better, I head for Carrillo's Mexican Deli in Winnetka, on Sherman Way at Corbin. Many Sherman Oaks residents I know will have them cater parties, big and small. Definitely worthy of a slight detour from the oaks.

La Fogata is one-half block shy of Magnolia on Van Nuys Blvd., on the East side of the street.

Tony's Mexican Grill in the strip mall at Magnolia and Coldwater in Sherman Oaks. Family run, authentic, no alcohol, quick and easy, great prices, eat-in, take-out or delivery.

Dos Arbolitos is my pick in the SFV. It is a family restaurant, with plenty of seating, and very informal. I love their chicken enchiladas with mole. My husband always enjoys their specials. And of course they have loads of other choices, always good from our experiences. They are in the shopping center on the southeast corner of Woodley Avenue and Nordhoff. Plenty of parking is available. They serve beer and probably wine. Their address is 9034 Woodley Ave, and their phone number is [818] 891-6661. Enjoy!
