Weekend Events Around Sherman Oaks

Lots of fun and interesting things happening around town—check out M Street Coffee, or The Oaks Tavern or Vitello's for great music.

This weekend has some fun events, including live music, improv, rugby and, of course, some Halloween-themed events that are not to be missed.

 

Thursday:

Where/When: M Street Coffee, 13251 Moorpark St., Sherman Oaks; 6 – 8 p.m.

Why Go: If you enjoy writing and want to share some of your work with an audience, come on down to M Street this evening where you can debut your writing talent. If you would rather just listen to others’ poetry that’s fine too, or you can sing something, if that’s more your style.

Pricing: No entrance fee.

 

Masta & The Edge of Soul

Where/When: , 14015 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 10 p.m.

Why Go: There is always great live music, and this R&B band draws a crowd and is always a hit on the weekends. 

Pricing: No entrance fee. 

 

Danny Janklow and Friends Late Night Hang

Where/When: Vitello’s Italian Restaurant, 4349 Tujunga Ave., Studio City; 10 p.m. to midnight.

Why Go: The weekend is finally approaching. Now it’s time to relax at Vitello’s in the downstairs lounge, listen to some talented musicians, eat some great food, and spend time catching up with friends. Danny Janklow will serenade us on the sax, Jordan Seigel will be playing the piano, Mike Gurrola will be playing bass, and Kevin Kanner will be drumming the night away.

American Primitive

Where/When: The Oaks Tavern, 13625 Moorpark St., Sherman Oaks; 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Why Go: Every Thursday there is live music, and tonight features a great bluegrass band, American Primitive. With a late-night happy hour from 10 p.m. until midnight, kick off your boots and have some fun to jumpstart the beginning of this weekend. 

Pricing: No entrance fee.

 

 

Friday:

Baby Storytime

Where/When: North Hollywood Branch Library, 5211 Tujunga Ave., North Hollywood; 10 a.m.

Why Go: Bring your little one down to the library and start your day off with some fun stories and songs, and spend some great quality time together. 

Pricing: Free.

 

TGIF Teen Movie: Thor

Where/When: North Hollywood Branch Library, 5211 Tujunga Ave., North Hollywood; 3:30 p.m.

Why Go: The free movie today is Thor, which stars Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman. The premise revolves around the god Thor, who gets exiled from his home, Asgard, and is banished to Earth. 

Pricing: Free. Rated PG-13.  115 minutes. 

 

CityWalk DJ Night

Where/When: Universal CityWalk, 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, 7 – 9 p.m.

Why Go: Every weekend Universal CityWalk offers free live music, and this evening there will be a multitude of DJs showcasing their talents and pumping out some great beats to start the weekend off. 

Pricing: Free.

 

Friday Night Jazz

Where/When: , 4336 Van Nuys Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 8-10 p.m.

Why Go: For those who don’t want to party hard on a Friday evening, spending an evening listening to jazz is mellow and relaxing.

Pricing: No entrance fee. 

 

Mystique featuring Chauncey Hines (R&B Jazz)

Where/When: , 14015 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 10 p.m.

Why Go: Café Cordiale is always a happening place to be—it’s convenient, close, and has great live music on the weekends.  

Pricing: No entrance fee. 

 

 

Saturday:

Sherman Oaks Community Farmers Market

Where/When: Sepulveda Boulevard and Camarillo Street, Sherman Oaks; 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: There’s always a great selection of produce to choose from, and kids can enjoy face painting and a fun slide while you get some groceries from local vendors.

Comedy Improv for KIDS by TEENS!

Where/When: , 13442 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 5:30 p.m.

Why Go: If your child is interested in the world of comedy, try taking them to see local teenagers perform live.

CityWalk DJ Night

Where/When: Universal CityWalk, 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City, 7 – 9 p.m.

Why Go: Tonight a group of DJs will be spinning a variety of beats and songs to enhance your Saturday evening while you walk around and take in all that CityWalk has to offer. 

Pricing: Free.

 

Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights

Where/When: 100 Universal City Plaza, Universal City; 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Why Go: Take the family and have a fantastically frightening time as chainsaw wielding ghouls seek out their next victims as you enter. There is a multitude of horrifying events to choose from including: mazes, the Terror Tram, rides and plenty of terror zones to run screaming out of.

Rugby World Cup 2011 Semi Finals LIVE

Where/When: Springbok Bar & Grill, 16153 Victory Blvd., Van Nuys; 1 a.m. (Sunday a.m.)

Why Go: Watch as New Zealand battles France for the Rugby World Cup and cheer on your favorite team with some friends if you’re up for a late night.  

Pricing: $10 cover after 10 p.m. for the WC Final. 

 

 

Sunday:

Spellbinding Sundays

Where/When: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; 12-2 p.m.

Why Go: Families can encounter magicians throughout the grounds, performing tricks and magical fun for the whole family.  Get ready for Halloween and practice some of your trick or treating by learning some cool new tricks that will impress your friends.

Louie Cruz Beltran

Where/When: Vibrato, 2930 Beverly Glen Circle, Bel Air; 6:30-10:30 p.m.

Why Go: Louie Cruz Beltran and his ensemble perform a large range of music including Brazilian style and Afro-Cuban rhythms, so head on over tonight if you want to hear some energetic and passionate rhythms that will fill the evening.

Ron Jones’ Jazz Influence Orchestra

Where/When: Vitello’s Italian Restaurant, 4349 Tujunga Ave., Studio City; 7:30 p.m.

Why Go: Listen to L.A.’s best recording musicians this evening as they come together to form the Influence Jazz Orchestra. The band performs new works by Ron Jones, as well as the best charts written for the ensemble group. If you’re a fan of Seth MacFarlane, he is a regular performer with the group, singing his favorite classic Sinatra songs.
