Lots to Do Locally on Carmageddon Weekend

The Sherman Oaks area is full of Carmageddon specials, so stay local and enjoy them.

There's always a lot to do in Sherman Oaks, but this Carmageddon weekend there are many reasons to stay local, and no need to drive.

 

Saturday:

Sherman Oaks Community Farmers Market

Find out what's happening in Sherman Oakswith free, real-time updates from Patch.

Where/When: Sepulveda Boulevard and Camarillo Street; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: There’s always a great selection of produce, fresh flowers and food to choose from. It's also a block from the Galleria, where you can catch a movie in a nice, air-conditioned theater.

Carmageddon Specials

Where/When: Valley Inn Restaurant, 4557 Sherman Oaks Ave., Sherman Oaks; all weekend.

Why Go: Due to the closure of the 405 freeway, the Valley Inn is featuring specials such as the $4.05 Madness Drink Specials and the $4.05 Side Detour Specials all weekend long. Enjoy a "Freeway on the Rocks" and some great sliders to ease the stress.

Kids Club: Wonderworld Puppets

Where/When: Sherman Oaks Galleria, 15301-15303 Ventura Blvd.; 11-11:30 a.m.

Why Go: From now until Aug. 13, Kids Club will have free shows for children as well as drawings for prizes from Galleria merchants on Saturday mornings. 

Pricing: Free. 

 

Arts and Crafts

Where/When: Playtown, Westfield Fashion Square, 14006 Riverside Dr.; 12-2 p.m.

Why Go: A great way to stay cool, and the kids will have a fun time with arts and crafts.

Retail Refuge

Where/When: Westfield Fashion Square, 14006 Riverside Dr.; all weekend.

Why Go: Get some shopping done and enjoy some of the retail advantages being offered during Carmageddon weekend. Fashion Square is offering free valet parking all weekend, a free carwash certificate (when you spend $200 or more), and you can enter to win prizes including an unlimited valet pass, a Schwinn bicycle and a $500 gas card.

Carmageddon Block Party

Where/When: The Shops at Woodman & Ventura, 13646 Ventura Blvd.; all weekend.

Why Go: Rediscover your local neighborhood and avoid all things freeway-related by staying close to home. Shop at one store, and get 10 percent off at the rest; just be sure to save your receipt. Stores participating in this block party include: Mr. Cecil’s California Ribs, Pane Dolce, Roni B., Sweet Harts, Tough Cookies, Freakbeat Records and more!

Pricing: Varies.

Where/When: Oak Fire Pizza, 13359 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; all day.

Why Go: Bucket of Beer Specials all day and half off the "build-your-own-bloody-mary" bar (11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) seem like great reasons to walk (I know, but who wants to be in a car this weekend?) around Sherman Oaks and just have a relaxing weekend.

Where/When: Coda Bar, 5248 Van Nuys Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Why Go: Along with late-night happy hour, Coda Bar will be featuring three special drinks in honor of the 405 shutdown this weekend: the Carmageddon, the Carmarita and the Carpool. There will also be DJs spinning music, so relax, have a themed drink, and have a good time. 

Pricing: Varies. No Cover.

 

Karaoke Contest

Where/When: The Oaks Tavern, 13625 Moorpark St., Sherman Oaks; 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Why Go: We’re all happy Carmageddon's almost over, so sing the night away in celebration that the 405 will be reopening for the work week (we hope?).
