You know we hear horrible stories every day and I guess I get numb to alot as a protetive device,Read More I'm sure. But this one really hit me. All those kids and the adults on a mission to improve their lives or the lives of others. Made me so sad. And this couple sounds so kind and lovely. Thank you for sharing it. Although it hurts.

My son went on a school trip to SF and is coming home today. I heard about the crash the first timeRead More it was broadcast and was worried sick. This tragedy is very heart wrenching for a parent like me and as a person. My prayers go out to those that lost their lives & their families as well as to those that were directly affected by the accident.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) April 13, 2014 at 08:52 am
Tracy, I'm with you. Obviously, being a journalist, there are terrible stories everyday. But thisRead More one cuts through bone. It's just horrific in every way and has ties to people up and down the state, with LA County, Riverside County and Orange County hit hard.

Wonderful. Most disgusting power play ever- squabbling over the issues of a deceased person. ThoughRead More Rooney should have had a will that specified that issue of burial. Still remembering Gregory Peck in that uniform right now...............

Let us only hope that all religions die off but from one disease; That of being found out.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) April 5, 2014 at 09:13 am
Well, that was certainly a rude comment to make on an obituary. I'm sure there are other places onRead More Patch for that discussion, but this isn't one of them.

David, even though I do agree with Penny that this isn't the right place and time to post this, butRead More in general I so do agree with you.

karma..goes around and comes around........maybe next will be Brian D"arcy~~!!
Lisa Ohlund March 29, 2014 at 01:11 am
Mr. or Ms. D. Jude - If by karma you mean that he will have a wonderful afterlife because of the wayRead More he lived this life, then I would agree with you; Col. Foley was the epitome of an officer and a gentleman and a heckuva water man. If you mean something derisive, then you never met him, and I will pray that one day you will rest in peace.
Dr. Richard Grossman, who founded his burn centers, starting in Sherman Oaks, died today. Patch file photo.
Irene DeBlasio March 14, 2014 at 04:47 pm
This is such tragic news for mankind. Dr. Grossman probably saved more lives than any world leaderRead More could ever hope to. He was a hero and should have been a Nobel Peace Prize recipient. When my family and I moved to Southern California in 1971 the only local hospital taking emergency patients was Sherman Oaks Hospital. He patched me up once for a minor burn. His incredible lifelong work ought to be recognized and celebrated by neighbors, by the state of California and by the federal government. He was an outstanding humanitarian and a wonderful man. Dear Dr. Grossman, rest in peace. My very deepest sympathy to Mrs. Elizabeth Grossman and son, Dr. Peter Grossman who will carry on in his name. Blessings and hugs to you both. It's a stunning loss.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) March 14, 2014 at 05:03 pm
What a wonderful tribute you wrote. Hugs to YOU.

George Vreeland Hill March 13, 2014 at 02:46 pm
I remember going to the funeral of a friend who was a police officer in New Hampshire. I have knownRead More his family for decades. The display of love and brotherhood was so big that it made the front page of the Boston Globe. I feel that same love in the photo above. Police really are brothers and sisters and the unity extends to all departments around the country. The respect is amazing. The bond is unshakable. My heart goes out to them all.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) March 13, 2014 at 02:49 pm
True, and you see and hear it from "brothers" who didn't know him personally, fromRead More departments from far-flung locales. An on-duty death impacts everyone "on the job."
Sid Caesar has died. He was 91. Patch file photo.
GreenInOC February 12, 2014 at 07:07 pm
If you ever get a chance to watch "Hail Sid Caesar!", it's a fantastic documentary. I'veRead More always found it fascinating that modern day comics continue to speak of Sid in awe and admiration.
Dave February 13, 2014 at 07:27 am
No question Caesar was a genius but he also had a great eye for talent, hand picking his co-stars onRead More "Show" and writers, Mel Brooks, an 18 year old Woody Allen, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart and Carl Reiner to name some of the most prominent. I had the great privilege and pleasure to see Mr Caesar give a two hour talk in the board room of the Screen Actor's Guild on Wilshire just east of the La Brea Tarpits about 8 years ago. Although the once tall and strapping Caesar had become shrunken and bent with age, once he was seated on the dais with moderator Joe Mantegna, you'd have thought you had been transported back to 1954 as Caesar came alive telling us of his memories working with all these great talents while tossing out some of his best bits- the foreign language imitations being as fresh and funny as they were on "Show of Shows". It was a night I won't soon forget and I am so glad I was able to see him in this small and intimate room. Rest in Peace, Sid. We won't be seeing your like again any time soon.
GreenInOC February 13, 2014 at 08:21 am
@Dave, what a treat - I wish I had been able to listen to him speak in person.

What a sad day. She was truly a magnificent woman working tirelessly on her yearly event. IRead More remember when we did the tee shirts for the even and I'd deliver them to the house and see how much work and donations she'd receive. And how the event grew from year to year. I truly thought very highly of her. RIP Gayle

Andy was one of the regular shoppers at Gelson's on Laurel Canyon and Riverside Drive when he livedRead More in Toluca Lake. He mingled with others in the market and was always gracious and accessible. Last time I saw him, he and I were mock fighting over ears of corn. He was one of our treasures -- under-estimated by some Hollywood standards of superstardom but a giant of spirituality, humor and caring (a fine musician, as well). Rest in peace, Andy

I met Dick Clark in 1961 as a member of the audience at American Bandstand in Philadelphia. I livedRead More in Lakewood at the time and presented him with a key to the city of Lakewood. One of his questions was: What is the one thing you do not like about California? and I answered him loudly the San Francisco Giants, as I was and still a Dodger Fan. I also got to attend the Dick Clark show in New York City that same summer, and gave him a 10 foot Beechnut Spearmint Flavor Ific gum rapper chain, which was the thing to do.
