How One Local Young Actor Balances Work with School

Sherman Oaks eight-year-old, Caitlin Carmichael, has been a professional actor since she was three. She adores having an acting career and is starring in a new movie, Wiener Dog Nationals that premiered on June 18.

But how does a kid who has to be on a set or in a wardrobe fitting in the middle of the day balance her passion with school?

With California Virtual Academies (CAVA), a statewide, online public school, a choice available to young professional actors (and a variety of other students) that offers a flexible education.  Students learn full-time, both online and offline in an individualized, mastery-based learning environment that helps students thrive in their own way.

Caitlin enjoys learning at CAVA so much she’s actually sad the school year is over. Her mother, Catherine Carmichael, appreciates the engaging, challenging curriculum provided by K12, and the guidance from California-credentialed teachers.  Catherine said, “If Caitlin decided to stop acting today, we would still continue her education at CAVA. Through this program, Caitlin has her eye on college and that’s important to us.”

Caitlin isn’t the only one starring in the Wiener Dog Nationals movie who has taken advantage of the personalized education of online school. Austin Anderson graduated from CAVA in 2012 and the child lead in the movie, Julian Feder, attends K12 International Academy.

But kids don’t have to be movie stars to enroll at CAVA. The online learning environment can also be a good fit for advanced learners who seek more of a challenge, or for students who get lost in the shuffle at a traditional school. Since CAVA is part of the California public school system, it’s tuition-free, and it meets or exceeds California state educational standards. CAVA serves students in kindergarten through 12th grade, giving families a choice in education.  Learn more about the school at www.k12.com/cava

Be sure to also watch Caitlin, Austin and Julian (and the very cute dogs) in their family-friendly film Wiener Dog Nationals.
