From Mark Zuckerberg to Lex Luther: Castings Announced

Warner Bros. taps Eisenberg and Oscar winner Jeremy Irons (Alfred!) for the upcoming Batman/Superman movie.

Oscar winner Jeremy Irons will take on the role of Bruce Wayne's butler/confidante Alfred in the upcoming Batman/Superman film, while Oscar-nominated actor Jesse Eisenberg will portray Batman's arch-enemy, Lex Luthor, Warner Bros. announced today.

The film, which is still untitled and is not scheduled for release until May 2016, has been generating plenty of buzz, particularly after the casting of Ben Affleck in the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne -- drawing plenty of mixed social-media reaction.

Henry Cavill will reprise his role as Superman/Clark Kent from Man of Steel while Gal Gadot will portray Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.

Man of Steel co-stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are also slated to return. Zack Snyder, best known for 300, will direct.

Eisenberg was nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network. Snyder said Eisenberg will bring new dimensions to the character of Lex Luthor, whose “intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman.”

Snyder called it an “honor to have such an amazing seasoned and gifted actor” as Irons portraying Alfred, who is Bruce Wayne's “most trusted friend,
ally and mentor.” Irons won an Oscar for his work in Reversal of Fortune.
