A team from El Camino Real High School was announced the winner of the U.S. Academic Decathlon title today in Honolulu.

In doing so, they beat out another Southland school, Granada Hills Charter High School, which was seeking its fourth consecutive national crown.

The title is the seventh for El Camino Real, which has been to 10 national competitions, finishing second in the three other appearances in which it didn't win a title.

Southern California schools have won 11 consecutive national championships and 18 overall. The competition has been held annually since 1982.

The decathlon concluded Friday, with competitors taking tests in economics, music, social science, mathematics, language and literature and science and answering questions in the super quiz.

The speech and interview portions were conducted Thursday. The competitors wrote an essay and took an art test at their schools April 3.

The study topic was World War I.
