CHAMPS, Daniel Pearl and Community Charter Named as Among Country's Best High Schools

Three area high schools were ranked among the best high schools in the country.

In the annual U.S. News and World Report rankings, Community Charter Early College High School, Daniel Pearl Magnet High School and Champs - Charter High School of Arts-Multimedia & Performing Arts are named among the Best High Schools in the United States.

It’s old news for Daniel Pearl Magnet School. The Van Nuys magnet school that specializes in journalism was previously ranked as 746 out of 21,776 evaluated schools, and 139th in the state’s 1,746 evaluated high schools.

This year, Pearl Magnet ranks 771 nationally and 152 in the state.

“We were great then, and we're only getting better,” they write on their website. “Go sharks!”

CHAMPS was ranked 1,471 in the nation and 340th in the state, a Silver rating.

Community Charter Early College High School in Lakeview Terrace began in 1999 and is geared specifically to help students prepare for college. That school has a Gold rating after hitting 172 nationally and 26th in the state. The schoole was recently named as one of the 35 California Distinguished Schools just last week.

North Hollywood Senior High School also has a Silver ranking, getting to 150th in the state and 769 nationally.

The 2013 Best High Schools rankings were released Tuesday,  and on top of the list was once again the School for the Talented and Gifted in the Dallas Independent School District .

U.S. News joined forces with the American Institutes for Research, a D.C.-based organization, to evaluate schools on overall student performance on state-mandated assessments. The rankings also included improvements on dealing with black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students. 

In the national rankings, 500 schools earned gold medals, 1,790 were awarded silver and 2,515 took home bronze.

California is the state with the most schools on the list, with close to 28 percent of the nearly 1,800 eligible schools in the state earning gold and silver medals. Maryland followed with roughly 26 percent.
