Take a Look at Proposed Final City Council Redistricting Maps... What Do You Think?

Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson announced today that three public hearings on proposed new council district boundaries are going to be held, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The council’s Rules, Elections and Intergovernmental Relations Committee will take up the proposed maps on Friday before holding three hearings next week. 

One meeting will be held in in San Pedro on Monday, one will be held in Van Nuys on Tuesday and one downtown at City Hall on Wednesday, March 7.

The proposed final boundaries for the districts were approved last week by a 21-member Redistricting Commission. You can see the proposed final maps attached in pdf form. The maps are very helpful in that they also show neighborhood council boundaries.

The proposed new Council District 4 would include all of the Greater Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council area, as well as the neighborhood of Sherman Village.

CD2 would include almost all of the area of the Midtown NoNo Neighborhood Council except for two small slivers. It would include all of the Neighborhood Council Valley Village, the Valley Glen Neighborhood Council, the NoHo West Neighborhood Council and 98.4 percent of the Studio City Neighborhood Council. A significant portion of the North Hollywood North East Neighborhood Council would be placed into CD6, while a portion of Sun Valley would be included in CD2, as would a portion of Van Nuys.

The original draft map followed the council boundaries between the North Hollywood North East NC, which was all in CD2, and the Sun Valley NC, which was in CD6.

The process of drawing the maps has been controversial, with some commissioners themselves describing it as "ugly" and "dysfunctional," according to the Times. And there has been no lack of controversy locally in the North Hollywood/Toluca Lake/Studio City area (see story links below) after vocal residents of Toluca Lake caused the Greater Toluca Lake Neighborhood Council area to be moved out of the proposed new CD2, which angered some, particularly some in Studio City.

The City Council is expected to vote to draft an ordinance changing the council district boundaries on March 16, according to the Times.

The redistricting commission will meet again on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m. at the Van Nuys City Council Chamber, located at 14410 Sylvan St., although no public comments are scheduled to be heard.
