SAFETY VIDEO: Drowning in Aqueduct Spurs Warning

The body of a man who had taken his dog out for a walk along the California Aqueduct is found in the water. Deputies speculate he may have tried to get his dog out of the water and got caught in the powerful current.

The death of a Palmdale man whose body was found over the weekend in the California Aqueduct is a warning to the many Sherman Oaks residents who enjoy hiking, biking or just walking along the massive waterway in the Antelope Valley.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies found the body of Thomas Hayes, 51, a corrections officer, who had been reported missing after he went out to take his dog for a walk along the aqueduct.

Deputies speculated that Hayes tried to get his dog out of the water and got caught in the aqueduct's powerful current. A passerby reportedly found the dog sitting by a parked car along the aqueduct, prompting the search for Hayes.
