Woman in Wheelchair Fatally Struck by Car

The accident occurs at about 5:50 p.m. at Sepulveda Boulevard and Haynes Street.

A woman in a motorized wheelchair was struck and fatally injured in Van Nuys as she rode across an unmarked crosswalk in Van Nuys Saturday afternoon, a  traffic detective said.

The accident occurred at about 5:50 p.m. at Sepulveda Boulevard and Haynes Street, said Detective William Bustos of the Los Angeles Police Department West Valley Division.

"A black 1987 Mercedes was traveling southbound on Sepulveda Boulevard at Haynes Street when it collided with a pedestrian in a motorized wheelchair traveling westbound on Haynes Street in an unmarked crosswalk," Bustos said. "The driver immediately stopped to assist the handicapped pedestrian. The driver has been identified as a 50-year old."

The pedestrian was transported to a hospital where she died from her injuries, he said. It was unclear whether the driver would face criminal charges.
