On Sunday, May 12th, a 24-year-old man was observed in the courtyard area of the Church on the Way, 14300 Sherman Way.

The suspect was observed holding a knife. Four armed security guards were alerted and responded to the courtyard and soon located the suspect in the main building looking through a cabinet, according to the LAPD Van Nuys division spokesman.

When the suspect threatened the first guard with the knife, they backed away and attempted to direct him from the campus. While the suspect was moving toward Tyrone Street, the security guards attempted to disarm the suspect but were unsuccessful. They followed the suspect north to Sherman Way and then eastbound on the south side of Sherman Way.

While attempting to keep the suspect in sight, the suspect turned and moved toward the guards in a threatening manner. One of the security guards fired hitting the suspect in the torso. The suspect fled a short distance before collapsing to the ground. He was then disarmed and provided assistance by the guards while they telephoned for police and paramedics.

The suspect was transported to Holy Cross Hospital where he was treated and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

Charges are pending.
