Bomb Squad Detonates 7 Lbs. of Explosives Left at Van Nuys Fire Station

A backpack holding about seven pounds of pyrotechnic explosives that had been left at a fire station in Van Nuys was safely detonated, police said Wednesday.

The backpack was brought to the fire station in the 14400 block of Sylvan Boulevard around 8 p.m. Tuesday by a man in his late 20s who had a prior connection with a film studio, said Sgt. M. Padilla of the Los Angeles Police Department's Foothill Station.

Padilla said the man had explained that the explosive was used for pyrotechnic effects.

"He claimed it was three pounds, but it was closer to seven," Padilla said.

Padilla said the explosive was destroyed by members of the LAPD bomb squad. He  said the man had not been arrested but was still being interviewed by police Tuesday morning.
