Burglary Suspect Arrested Using New System

Six counts of burglary charged against man who was located by police using data from his GPS ankle bracelet.

A parolee wearing a monitoring ankle bracelet was linked to at least six robberies because of the device, authorities said today. Perry Pemberton, 29, of Los Angeles, was required to wear it because he was regarded as a dangerous, high-risk parolee, police said.

The first two burglaries occurred in Sherman Oaks on Oct. 24. The first occurred about 9 p.m. in the 15400 block of Huston Street. Pemberton is accused of entering the home while the victim was asleep in a bedroom. It wasn't until a family member returned home that it was discovered several rooms had been ransacked and jewelry stolen, according to detectives.                                                                                                                                The second burglary that day occurred about 10 p.m. in the 15600 block of Royal Woods Place. The sliding glass door was forcibly opened, but the suspect was confronted by the victim shortly after entering. Pemberton shined a flashlight in the victim's eyes with the intention of causing momentary blindness, then he ran from the home, police said.

The Vericheck system, a relatively new device, can pinpoint a person's location within feet, and follows the person for an entire year. The system confirmed that Pemberton had been inside both homes, police said. The same system was used by lawmen the next day and Pemberton was located in the 12600 block of Western Avenue in Hawthorne where he was playing football.                                                                                                                                             He was taken into custody without incident and later released after posting a $500,000 bail. At the time of his arrest, items of jewelry were recovered from Pemberton's luxury car and linked to burglaries in Santa Clarita and Burbank. Further checks of the Vericheck Monitoring System tied him to additional burglaries in Woodland Hills and Bel Air.
