A View from Left Field- Guns are the Facilitators of Death

Now that 20 precious children along with their heroic teachers were slain in their classrooms in Newtown, Connecticut by a demented loner with an assault gun, I’m waiting for the National Rifle Association (NRA) to regurgitate their rap that people kill people, not guns.   Hopefully, we are finally coming to realize that such dribble is patently absurd.  Guns are the facilitators!   Without them most of the violence that manifests across our nation would not happen.

The verbatim transcript of the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution reads:

      Second Amendment – Militia (United States), Sovereign state, Right to keep and bear arms.

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

In reading this, the word ”people” refers back to “regulated militia” and “free state”  so what should be inferred is that a well regulated militia should be established to bear arms and protect us, not  private citizens, half crazed lunatics or jingoistic warriors seeking fifteen minutes of limelight.

The less guns that are out there, the fewer people die.  It’s as simple as that.  Twenty beautiful children missed school this week because they are sleeping in their graves.  The inconceivable hurt that their families feel will never go away.

Guns are lethal and those who use them have an awesome responsibility.  Even former Vice-President, Dick Cheney is not immune.  He mistakenly mistook a friend for a potential trophy of the hunt, and put a hit on him.  Most European countries have fewer deaths by fire arms per thousand than we do because they possess fewer of them.

Sanity must prevail.  Let’s start by banning automatic and semi-automatic assault weapons and shell clips over ten rounds.  Weapons used to protect our families and for sport hunting need not be rapid fire.  The mass murder scenes that blighted our national landscape over the past fifteen years might never have been, save for the ability of psychopaths to attain automatic weapons.

We need to stand up for the protection of our families, friends and society.  These indiscriminate slaughters must cease. Make your views known to your elected officials, federal, state and local.  Finally, it’s time we used our voices to “fire” back at the NRA.
