Community Corner

Congressional Town Hall for Voters in the 30th District

The Community has been invited by the local Congressman
to learn what is going on in DC,
to let the Congressman  "hear your views about PP/ACA, taxes, the economy, the budget, Social Security and Medicare ---and all the other issues facing Congress.

The Congressman utilized his franking privileges to provide a brochure for attendees to know the bills he has co-sponsored or "helped":

  • Genetically Engineered Food Right To Know Act - This bill was assigned to a congressional committee on April 24, 2013. Brad Sherman was one of the last two legislators to co-sponsor the bill, on Jan 8, 2014
  • Los Angeles Residential Helicopter Noise Relief Act  - HR456 was introduced by Congressman Schiff 2-3-13 and did not pass on its own.  Instead it was tacked on to the omnibus budget bill  (!!!)
  • Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act - HR 1554 - This bill was assigned to a congressional committee on April 15, 2013. It is estimated this has a 0% chance of getting out of Committee
  • Improper Payments Elimination & Recovery Improvement Act - HR 4053   This bill was enacted after being signed by the President on January 10, 2013.   Brad Sherman was NOT one of the 19 co-sponsors.
  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau - (opposing HR 3193 which would "severely weaken CFPB)

H.R. 3193 makes necessary reforms to an unaccountable Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). Specifically, the bill replaces the existing director who has sole responsibility for carrying out the CFPB’s mission with a Commission comprised of the Fed’s Vice Chair for Supervision and four members appointed by the President, with the advice and consent of the Senate.[1]

The bill eliminates the CFPB’s current exemption from the budgetary process and subjects the CFPB to the regular authorization and appropriations process.[2]  It also reins in CFPB salaries by requiring the CFPB to pay its employees according to the GS pay scale like other federal agencies.
