SONC Votes to Reconsider Il Villaggio Toscano

The Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council moved to leave discussion open regarding the Il Villaggio Toscano project.

The Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council, by a tally of 8-2, voted Monday to revisit their vote on the Il Villaggio Toscano residential and retail project, which SONC approved last month.

, and at Monday's meeting, the board voted not to reverse their decision, but rather to reconsider their vote.

“It’s a parliamentary procedure," said boardmember Ron Ziff, who is also chair of the SONC Land Use Committee. "When somebody votes in favor of a motion changes their mind, they can ask to have the vote taken a second time, as long as they do it by the next meeting.”

Ziff, who voted in favor of the Toscano project at May's meeting, said that his concerns, similar to several other boardmembers, is that the public have the opportunity to further discuss the project.

“My thoughts are the same as they have been throughout," Ziff said. "I have been concerned that everything we do be completely transparent and available to the public to allow as much discussion as possible. That was my only motive in voting in favor of the motion to reconsider.”

“My only concern is that we continue to keep the process very public and very open,” he added.

The board will now reconsider whether to approve the Toscano project at July's SONC meeting.

In its current form, the project, located at the corner of Sepulveda Boulevard and Camarillo Street, incorporates 399 dwelling units and 52,000 square-feet for commercial use, which includes a 13,000-square-foot plaza that will run the length of Sepulveda Boulevard. There will also be 1206 parking spaces.

The Toscano project has been a hot button issue in the Sherman Oaks community over the past two years, as the public seems to be split on what effects the project will have locally.

Many are concerned that the project will exacerbate an already tumultuous traffic situation on Sepulveda Boulevard, while others maintain that traffic on Sepulveda is an issue that the city must address and will not be significantly affected by possible development.

No date has been determined for July's SONC meeting, but members of the public are encouraged to attend and voice their concerns.

Didn't know there were mulligans in NC votes. A new vote on some issue that has already passed will show how meaningless this NC's is. If you didn't want it in the first place you should not have voted for it or tabled it for a later vote.

Typical developer logic to say their new development will not effect traffic. They say it's an issue that the city must address?? Well guess what... the way to address that issue/problem is to question whether a bloated, disrespectful, illegal development is more of a problem for a community than an asset. Greed and faulty bloated reasoning does nothing to make the city a better place to live.

I think there is something that was not mentioned in this article. An amendment to the original vote, hence the reconsideration voting! The amendment is to require the developer to do away with the 7th and 8th floors of the project, reducing the overall amount of condo/apartments by some 100+ units, bringing the total amount of living units to around 300+. Losing the 7th and 8th floor will obviously reduce the height also.

It seems to me when some SONC members had a walk around at the IL Villaggio Toscano location with Sherman Oaks soon to be new LACC member Tom LaBonge, he might have had some influence towards the SONC members about their voting. Or maybe a person that truly seemed to hated this project Jeff Kalban had some behind the scene talks with soft minded SONC members to infer a reconsideration of their votes.
Jeff Kalban is on the SONC Land Use committee, he seemed to foam at the mouth and his face turn red when protesting this development at SONC Land Use Committee meetings. FYI- Jeff Kalban has his own architecture firm, maybe he is jealous for not getting the job for this project and pay back is political, well you know what I mean. It takes a lot of guts or shear stupidity for a SONC committee member to tell a constituent to shut up! Yeah that's right, Jeff Kalban was so upset during the vote last month he told a Sherman Oaks resident in the audience to shut up, even when the person talking was directing their question toward SONC President Jill Barad. I think there is a audio/video clip to be heard...

What kind of non-committal, flip-flop, scared to offend group of people sit on this board? The whole thing is ONE BIG JOKE. Progress is a word that will never be spoken in this city. You all will get what you deserve: a big ugly non-residential building that will be 10 times worse than the apartment complex. And I will laugh every day that I drive by it.

Well said BJ. Unfortunately Los Angeles is full of these kind of "representatives". Even the police chief is scared to offend criminals among us by not impouding thier cars even though they don't have a license to drive one. It's sad... everyone is too scared of offending a person or group of people. They choose the easy way over the right way. PC is for the birds. Bunch of scared suckers if you ask me.

I heard on the street that Maria Kalban operates the United Neighbors organization, which is against the Il Villaggio Toscano project. Interesting that Jeff Kalban who is a member of the SONC Land Use Committee is Maria’s husband. Jeff Kalban was the out spoken SONC Land Use committee member that did not get his way when the Land Use committee voted to approve the Il Villaggio Toscano project. It seemed he liked the projects design but not something else.
I actually saw an email blast from Kalban’s organization and it seem she doesn't sign her full name, just Maria. Maybe she is trying to stay incognito so it doesn’t look like there’s any home politics going on. Just typical politics, you know the kind of stuff everyone likes about politics.

Where was this?
Paul June 17, 2013 at 04:05 pm
I was stopped coming out of the neighborhood by police. They said they were looking for a whiteRead More male, 5'10 with a tan shirt on who they were chasing in a car. He apparently dumped the car near Greenleaf and Davana Terrace and fled in the neighborhood. Not sure what he did or if they caught him.

I have photos of the 4 or 5 armed officers with their dog in tow in my backyard. For some reason IRead More couldn't upload the pix. The streets were blocked off by lapd cars south of Ventura, at Hazeltine and Stansbury avenue. They made us stay inside for At least two hours. We never heard if they caught the tan shirt man or not. We felt well protected however
