Neighborhood Council Backs Fight Against Cell Towers

Sherman Oaks coalition gains support as it plans to go before the city's Public Works Committee to request a moratorium on further placement of structures that send out cellphone signals.

Continuing their fight against the installation of cellphone towers in their neighborhood, members of the local coalition Get the Cell Out appeared before the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council this week to seek support for their appearance Thursday at a city Public Works Committee meeting.

In a presentation to the Neighborhood Council, coalition member Nahtahna Cabanes sought the council's backing for a moratorium on the placement of any further cell towers in the area until more regulations are in place.

The Neighborhood Council responded by voting unanimously to send a letter to the Public Works Committee supporting the coalition's proposed moratorium.

Cabanes told Patch that residents also hope to push for removal of existing installations. She said although there was still a long road ahead, each step, such as getting the Neighborhood Council's backing, puts them in the right direction.

Coalition spokeswoman Leslie Young said she believes there needs to be more control over cellphone companies. "What goes on with these cell-phone carriers, it's like a runaway train," she said. Young said there is currently no mechanism in place to police tower installations.
