Police Pursuit of Shooting Suspect Ends in Suicide at Vose Street

A man who shot a woman in Van Nuys led law enforcement personnel on a pursuit through the San Fernando Valley and the Ventura County cities of Camarillo, Oxnard and Ventura before returning to Van Nuys, where he ended his own life, police said today.

The initial shooting occurred around 10:30  p.m. Sunday, when the suspect, whose name was not immediately released, shot and critically wounded a woman in the 14600 block of Vose Street, said Captain Ivan Minsal of the Los Angeles Police Department's Van Nuys Station.

"We identified the suspect and a vehicle pursuit ensued," Minsal said.

California Highway Patrol officers took over the chase in Ventura County. Both CHP and LAPD officers pursued the suspect on the San Diego (405) and Ventura (101) freeways and were behind him when he stopped his utility truck at the intersection of Sherman Way and Haskell Avenue and shot himself, said police Sgt. Steve Gottschalk of the Van Nuys Station. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wounded woman was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center, where her condition was listed as critical but stable, Gottschalk said.
