Man Fights for Life After Found at L.A. Fitness Spa

A man is "fighting for his life'' Monday after being found unresponsive in a spa at a gym in Van Nuys, a city fire official said.

The near drowning was reported at 7:57 p.m. Saturday at the LA Fitness located at 6161 N. Sepulveda Blvd., according to Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department. Other gym members found the man and pulled him out of the water, Humphrey said.

Bystanders pulled the fire alarm and called for help, and one man started CPR, Humphrey said. Rescuers arrived at the scene and began additional life-saving measures, Humphrey said.

"The victim's breathing, pulse and blood pressure were restored on the way to the hospital,'' Humphrey said, giving heroic credit to the bystander who started CPR. The man was taken to Valley Presbyterian Hospital initially in grave condition, but it was upgraded to critical.

"He is still fighting for his life tonight,'' Humphrey said, "but due to the bystander rescue and LAFD efforts he has a fighting chance for survival.''
