A Hero on the Track is Found at Walter Reed Middle School

Since the CBS 2 news picked up on the heroic efforts on the Walter Reed Middle School track field, the boys have been heroes.

Principal Donna Tobin said the story has been all over the local Facebook pages, and one middle school teacher said, "It's very different to see that the kids this age think about something other than themselves."

Walter Reed, based in Studio City, has an annual track competition where students try to break the school records and get their names on the big board in the gym.

Hector Murillo was certain to be on that board this year, but while they were running, his friend Jarahmeel Fong pulled a muscle that knocked him out of the competition, and he fell.

Murillo gave up his record-breaking chance and stopped to help his friend.

According to the CBS report:

“I’ve taught physical education for eight years, and I’ve coached for 20. This is one of the best experiences I’ve seen of sportsmanship,” said P.E. teacher Jorge Miranda.

“It was the buzz of the campus. Then the teachers got into it. And all of the teachers gave him certificates in each of his classes,” said Principal Donna Tobin.

“He’s a good person. I was actually surprised that he stopped.  So he’s deserving of (the attention),” said Jarahmeel.
