Where to Get Dragon Fruit, Grass Jelly and Live Crabs

The Asian market is turning 20 next January.

Have a hankering for Dragon fruit? Can't find a Starfruit? How about some live Dungeness Crab?

The only place in the San Fernando Valley to find some of the unique 4,000 Asian products is at the 99 Ranch Market in Van Nuys.

The store is part of a chain of 30 Asian markets and this one will turn 20 next January.

Inside, there are two rows of just different sorts of Ramen noodles. There are live lobsters, crabs for $3.99 a pound. There are bamboo shoots for eating and growing, Langon fruit, cheremoya and all sorts of unique fruits and vegetables that people can't find at the local Ralphs.

You can get steamed bean bun for $3.99 for four, and fresh sushi. Grass jelly drink is 79 cents a can.

The large  99 Ranch Market Van Nuys is just off I-405 and Victory Boulevard, on Sepulveda Boulevard. The manager is Martin Wu and the assistant manager is Lex Shi. Many of the employees have worked at the market for more than a decade and live in the area. The shop is opened 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days  a week

Um, excuse me, am I going to have to subscribe to the Patch in Sherman Oaks now to get these cute little stories by Mister Michael Syzmanski? I love this one about the fruit market, I never knew.... and why isn't this in the Patch in Studio City??

I have been going there for years to get ingredients for the 'kosher' Chinese cuisine I produce in my own kitchen: sesame oil, egg roll skins, lichee nuts, bean sprouts - you name it! Years back, my grandson (now 14) thanked me for taking him to the aquarium. When I told him it was a market, he said, "But what about all the crabs, clams, and lobsters - this place looks like an aquarium!"

Where was this?

I was stopped coming out of the neighborhood by police. They said they were looking for a whiteRead More male, 5'10 with a tan shirt on who they were chasing in a car. He apparently dumped the car near Greenleaf and Davana Terrace and fled in the neighborhood. Not sure what he did or if they caught him.

I have photos of the 4 or 5 armed officers with their dog in tow in my backyard. For some reason IRead More couldn't upload the pix. The streets were blocked off by lapd cars south of Ventura, at Hazeltine and Stansbury avenue. They made us stay inside for At least two hours. We never heard if they caught the tan shirt man or not. We felt well protected however
