What's That Big Project at Ventura and Hazeltine?

Many people have asked us: what is that big project under construction where Barone's popular restaurant used to be.

Barone's was one of Sherman Oaks' most popular restaurants before it closed nearly six years ago. The property near the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Hazeltine Avenue was then vacant until this year when a construction crew built a fence around it and began digging a big hole in the ground.

Many residents have emailed us asking what's going on.

Here's the answer: The development under construction is creating 113 residential units and it will also include more than 16,000 square feet of retail space on Ventura Boulevard. Plans call for restaurants, according to the developer, BW Brody.

The Spanish Colonial project is scheduled to open early in 2013.

Meantime, Barone's has moved to its new location on Oxnard Street in Valley Glen, where the deep dish pizza is a popular favorite.

I am sure the environmental impact report said NONE on VN traffic, yes & it's only a cold sore. This is a gridlocked area many hours of the day. Are the putting in signals? Traffic mitigation stuff. I also hear a new CVS will also be put there! All these mixed use projects are 60-80& vacant in Encino...Legado, etc., maybe if they weren't asking $1,800 for a studi!!!

It's all part of our not so beloved mayor's attempt to make L.A. into New York City, i.e. the "mixed use" construction all along Ventura Blvd. He stupidly believes that people who live above these stores on major streets will use public transportation. I moved here from NYC. In New York, that is the only way to get around. Not here. This is stupid and misguided. NO ONE who lives in these apartments will be taking the bus and everyone is right. It will add more congestion with an addition of 200 plus cars from the building's residents as well as the increased traffic from people shopping at the stores. And wait till the new Ralphs opens!

Oh good! A new CVS! There certainly aren't enough.

Is there no control of development here?
Robert Jacobs March 28, 2012 at 11:01 PM
Not to mention that JACKASS traffic lights they put in over there.

The city has given up on Sherman Oaks. The quality of life in our suburban ghetto has plummeted. Our mayor is a disgrace and his choices are a slap in the face to every citizen of LA.

I hear there are going to be some delicious restaurants, no CVS... looking forward to some good new eats in the area!

I heard that the Trader Joes on Hazeltine & Riverside is moving there. That is apparently why Ralph's is holding off on their tear down. They want to see what happens. Moorpark & Hazeltine is a deadly intersection as it is now. I just can't imagine more traffic running through there.

At one point, Trader Joe's had looked at relocating to this site, but that was long ago. And a CVS will not be locating here either. Beth is correct, listen to her. Stay tuned. But Robert Jacobs is also correct - that new signal at Hazeltine takes FOREVER to navigate.

Sounds great, anyone know what restaurants are going in? I work and live nearby, it will be nice being able to walk to more places instead of driving. Ralphs is coming down next month is what I hear, anyone know if thats still true?

The new traffic light timing at Hazeltine and Ventura is already making life miserable. I live South of Hazeltine and completely avoid Ventura at that spot whenever possible. With this new timing the traffic backs up in ridiculous numbers!!! Help! Can't the timing be changed back to a reasonable length of time???

I heard this complex will be ready in August and Ralph's is closing May 14th to start their construction (info from a Ralph's manager). I would love know what restaurants/businesses will be at this location!
