Grandma Prisbey's Bottle Village Open House

Where/When:  Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., 4595 Cochran St., Simi Valley; 818-468-9870.

Why Go: This is a rare opportunity to tour this folk art site, which is not regularly open to the public. It is the single-handed work of self-taught senior citizen Tressa "Grandma " Prisbey. Beginning construction in 1956 at age 60, and working until 1981, Prisbey transformed her one-third-acre lot into Bottle Village, an otherworld of shrines, wishing wells, walkways, random constructions and 15 life-size structures all made from found objects placed in mortar. The name "Bottle Village" comes from the structures themselves–made of tens of thousands of bottles unearthed via daily visits to the dump. Everyone must wear soft-soled shoes (sneakers) that are closed-toed. No strollers. No public restrooms on site.

Pricing: Free, but suggested donations are $10 for adults and $10 for kids; free for children under 5.
