Mayor and Celebs Help Clean Up River

Stars such as Daphne Zuniga, Esai Morales and Sharon Lawrence helped pick up along the river.

An estimated 5,000 volunteers, including some Hollywood stars, helped Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa kick off a volunteer campaign to pick up trash around the Los Angeles River on Saturday.

The mayor called the effort the biggest river cleanup in city history.

It was the 22nd Great Los Angeles River Cleanup which needed debris pulled out and graffiti painted over along the 50 miles of river from the San Fernando Valley to Long Beach.

"The river cleanup is my favorite day of the year,'' said author Lewis
MacAdams, founder of the Friends of the L.A. River, according to City News Service"In addition to encouraging people to experience the L.A. River in person, it's a great way for people to get to know each other and join in on a great cause.''

About 25 tons of debris gets picked up along the concrete-lined river.

The mayor said, "Cleaning up the L.A. River is a worthwhile endeavor that captures the positive spirit of volunteerism."
