Local Woman Makes Her Own Cleaning Products

Victoria Kheel promotes 'green' with her line of safe and eco-friendly household products.

A few years ago Victoria Kheel of Sherman Oaks got rid of the brand-name cleaning products in her home. Clorox bleach was the first to go. Then Tide detergent, and gradually other household products that had ingredients she couldn’t pronounce.

About a year ago, Khee, 52, who also grows organic fruits and vegetables at home, produced a line of eco-friendly, plant-based cleaning products called Poppy’s Naturally Clean—named after her English bulldog Poppy.

“I have three dogs that jump on my leather couch and furniture, so I had to come up with a leather cleaner that was safe for them,” she said.

She took a nutrition program about toxins in household products. “So I developed my own; they work better.”

The All-Purpose Spray Cleaner is free of fragrances and preservatives. Kheel's cleaners, from the aloe vera hand soap to the laundry powder, contain such plant-based materials as olive oil, glycerin and tea tree oil.

“All of my stuff is ensured. If a kid drinks this,” she said holding up a bottle of spray cleaner, “they’ll probably be fine.”

Kheel makes her products and the labels for them at home.

She has a booth at the Sherman Oaks Farmers Market on Saturdays. Kheel said her best sellers are the laundry powder and hand soap. Baby wipes are $5; the hand sanitizer is $3; the toilet bowl cleaner costs $4.50.

“I try to keep prices low. The ultimate goal is to get natural products out to the general public.”

“Farmers Market is a great environment for what I do,” Kheel said. “I get immediate feedback. People are excited about it.”

Natural Products Expo West awarded her with Best of Show in February for her Poppy’s line.

“I’m so focused on this. I’m so excited about it,” Kheel said. “It’s a big adventure. I’m content in knowing what I’m doing.”
