'Wolverine' Slashes to the Top Spot

The latest installment of the "X-Men" film series, "The Wolverine" in 3-D, opened with a $53.1 million take at the weekend box office to snag the top spot, according to final figures released today.

In second place was the horror film "The Conjuring," which grossed $22.2 million from Friday to Sunday, boosting its two-week domestic total to $83.9 million, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.

In third place was the animated "Despicable Me 2"  in 3-D with $16.4 million, followed by another animated film, "Turbo," which earned $13.7 million. Adam Sandler's comedy "Grown Ups 2" snared fifth place with $11.6 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were "Red 2" ($9.3 million); "Pacific Rim" ($7.7 million); "The Heat" ($6.9 million); "R.I.P.D" ($6 million); and "Fruitvale Station" ($4.5 million).

The dozen top-grossing films took in $158 million over the weekend, up 24.91 percent from $126.4 million earned by the 12 top films during the same period a year ago.
