What's Happening Sunday in Sherman Oaks

The Conor Lynch 5k Run/Walk and the Sherman Oaks Street Fair are the major events. Patch will have a booth at the street fair—stop by and say hello to our team.

 

Sunday:

Conor Lynch Run/Walk Event

Where/When: Van Nuys Sherman Oaks Park, 14230 Magnolia Blvd., Sherman Oaks; check-in at Sherman Oaks Little League. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the actual run starts at 8:30 a.m.

Why Go: This event is to raise awareness and promote safety of pedestrians, runners, cyclists, and young drivers. Conor Lynch, whom the event is named after, was a 16-year-old student at Notre Dame who was  struck by a car and killed last year while crossing Woodman Avenue.

Pricing: $30 donation. Participants may register at Active.com. Packet pickup will be at Runnergy. 

 

Sherman Oaks Chamber Street Fair

Where/When: Ventura Boulevard, between Van Nuys Boulevard and Kester Avenue; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Why Go: With a multitude of fun activities for children and adults, this is an annual event everyone looks forward to. The street is transformed into a pedestrian mall, offering more than 100 vendors, various kids rides, musical entertainment, school performances, a beer garden and food from around the world. Patch will have a booth, so stop by, introduce yourself and meet the Patch team!

Pricing: Free admission. 

 

Sunday Football Fun

Where/When: The Oaks Tavern, 13625 Moorpark St., Sherman Oaks; 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Why Go: When football is on, bars always have great specials, and today at the Oaks Tavern you can enjoy some football, free waffles from 10-11 a.m., and free chili dogs at noon. After the games have ended you can celebrate or commiserate with some karaoke.

Masters of Illusion Tour

Where/When: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; 2:30 p.m.

Why Go: This docent-led tour explores the Golden Age of Magic and will take you through the Skirball gardens, where you can see outdoor street performances, Victorian magic parlors, and vaudeville stage sets where many magicians performed between 1875 and 1948. 

Pricing: Included with museum admission. $10 for adults, $7 for children. 

 

Harvard Westlake School Jazz Night

Where/When: Vibrato, 2930 Beverly Glen Circle, Bel Air; 6:30-10:30 p.m.

Why Go: Tonight you can relax and unwind up at Vibrato, where you can listen to future jazz stars displaying their musical talents. 

Pricing: No entrance fee.

Dear Hollietiger, CHAMPSFEST2013 was an awesome experience for my child. She was there all day andRead More had the best time. When I dropped her off I saw a slew of security personnel checking bags and wanding. She told me security was there immediately and a medic on hand. Her friend is fine and is going to school Monday morning. The hammer was from a vendor. The kid could have grabbed one of the stakes from a tent or a chair. Things happen, but I trust that the school and the administrators did the right thing. It's very counter productive and irresponsible to write things when you don't know the facts. I will support and trust CHAMPS and my daughter is already looking forward to next years CHAMPSFEST.

First of all, I don't know where your child got his information but he is quite uninformed. HeRead More obviously was believing all the rumors spreading at then end of the event. The victim's skull WAS NOT "cracked open and ... bleeding everywhere." CHAMPSFEST 2013 was a public event, therefore open to the PUBLIC. CHAMPS (the school) has no control of mental competency of attendants from other schools. Security was there in droves to protect the entire venue. As far as nothing being reported that is also FALSE. The kid was NOT taken away in handcuffs. Police were there and it is confidential information that was not released to the general population and is not a matter of public record. Second of all, the resources provided by the city were there as a backup (you mentioned "2 ambulances, police fire trucks... Not really sure what police fire trucks are but that's besides the point). We wanted to make sure that in this case of emergency all bases were covered and the safety of the victim was going to be treated properly. Next time you hear about an incident, I would consider the reputation of the people who worked so hard to put on the event and let them handle the situation before posting incorrect information to the entire community.
