What's Up This Weekend in Sherman Oaks Area

There's a wide range of entertainment offerings, from comedy to football.

It'll be a busy weekend in and around Sherman Oaks ... art exhibits, live entertainment, comedy, theater, football and a Breaking Bad live event.

Thursday:

Anh Dinh Gallery Reception

Where/When: M Street Coffee, 13251 Moorpark St., Sherman Oaks; 6-8 p.m.

Why Go: Born in Saigon, Anh Dinh came to the United States unable to speak English and in search of her dreams. M Street Coffee debuts her exhibit of calming and serene artwork this evening so head on over, grab an organic coffee and see some unique local artwork.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ 300—IMAX

Where/When: Universal CityWalk, 100 Universal City Plaza, 91608; 8-9:30 p.m.

Why Go: The epic story of King Leonidas and a force of 300 men battling the Persians in 480 B.C. unfolds dramatically on an enormous IMAX screen. The first 300 guests will receive a free poster. Rated R.

Beyond Stand-Up

Where/When:  , 13442 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 8:30 p.m.

Why Go: Talented local comedians perform every Thursday, and it’s right on Ventura if you want to attend a fun event but don’t want to go very far.

Danny Janklow and Friends Late Night Hang

Where/When: Vitello’s Italian Restaurant, 4349 Tujunga Ave., Studio City; 10 p.m. to midnight.

Why Go: The weekend is nearly upon us and it’s time to relax at Vitello’s in the downstairs lounge, listen to some talented musicians, eat some great food, and spend time catching up with friends. Tonight will feature the talents of: Danny Janklow on sax, Jordan Seigel on piano, Mike Gurrola on bass, and Kevin Kanner on drums.

Byron Blocker

Where/When: The Oaks Tavern, 13625 Moorpark St., Sherman Oaks; 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Why Go: Little did I know there was such a genre as “pirate blues,” but apparently there is and its unique sound is alluring. With great rhythm and great vocals, this act will definitely get you in the weekend mode.

Friday:

Baby Storytime

Where/When: North Hollywood Branch Library, 5211 Tujunga Ave., North Hollywood; 10 a.m.

Why Go: Bring your little one down to the library to start your day off with some fun stories and songs, and spend some great quality time together. 

Pricing: Free.

 

Creative Dance/Ballet

Where/When: , 14252 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 3-4 p.m.

Why Go: It's a great opportunity for young children (ages 3-5) to learn some easy and basic steps while having fun with other local kids.

TGIF Teen Movie: Unknown

Where/When: North Hollywood Branch Library, 5211 Tujunga Ave., North Hollywood; 3:30 p.m.

Why Go: Go with some friends and try to figure out the twists and turns of the film's plot before they can. The premise is that the main character (Liam Neeson) awakens from a coma to discover his identity has been stolen and not even his wife believes him. Rated PG-13.

Kvetch

Where/When: , 13500 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 8 p.m.

Why Go: The SeaGlass Theatre presents Steven Berkoff’s Kvetch at our local theater, through Oct. 16. This dark comedy gives us a closer look into the true thoughts that are deep within all of us, including our fears, desires and perhaps even darker thoughts.

Friday Night Jazz

Why Go: For those who don’t want to party hard on a Friday evening, spending an evening listening to jazz is mellow and relaxing.

Masta & The Edge of Soul

Why Go: There is always great live music, and this R&B band draws a crowd and is always a hit on the weekends.

CityWalk DJ Night

Where/When: Universal CityWalk, 100 Universal City Plaza, 91608; 7-9 p.m.

Why Go: Every weekend Universal CityWalk offers free live music, and this evening there will be a multitude of DJs showcasing their talents and pumping out some great beats to get your weekend started.

Pricing: Free.

 

 

Saturday:

Sherman Oaks Community Farmers Market

Where/When: Sepulveda Boulevard and Camarillo Street; 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: There’s always a great selection of produce, and kids can enjoy face painting and a fun slide while you get some groceries from local vendors.

Spellbinding Sundays

Where/When: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; 12-2 p.m.

Why Go: Families can encounter magicians throughout the grounds, performing tricks and magical fun for the whole family. Get ready for Halloween early and practice the trick part of trick or treating.

AFTERBUZZ TV: Breaking Bad Edition

Where/When: Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, 1000 Universal Studios Blvd., No. 222, Universal City; 7 p.m.

Why Go: Maria Menounos and her new media network will be joining a live audience at the comedy club for the season finale of the hit show Breaking Bad. Following the finale, there will be an after-show and some cast members will be in attendance to be interviewed.
