What's Happening Around Sherman Oaks for the July 4th Weekend

There are plenty of ways to chill for the holiday.

It's Fourth of July weekend and there are lots of fun-filled events in and around Sherman Oaks.

Friday:

Celebrate Liberty & Dinner Specials

Where/When: Valley Inn Restaurant, 4557 Sherman Oaks Ave., Sherman Oaks; 5-10 p.m.

Why Go: Celebrate this holiday weekend with a great meal and head to the Valley Inn where they have a fantastic dinner special for a holiday-related price of $17.76 (that number should look familiar to all of us, hopefully). They’re offering items such as Boston clam chowder, lobster and shrimp thermador pasta, and even some mouth-watering BBQ ribs, so go get your eat on and celebrate everything American this weekend.

Basic Ballet

Where/When: Anisa’s School of Dance, 14252 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 4-5 p.m.

Why Go: Great opportunity for children ages 7-10 to learn the basic steps and concepts of ballet.

Firehouse

Where/When: Whitefire Theatre, 13500 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 8 p.m.

Why Go: Quality theater can always be found in Sherman Oaks, and Firehouse is one such piece. This play has an intricate plot and great themes throughout, so if you want to stay close to Ventura Boulevard, head on over to the Whitefire for a great evening of theater.

Friday Night Jazz

Where/When: Fab’s Corner Cucina, 4336 Van Nuys Blvd., Sherman Oaks; 8-10 p.m.

Why Go: For those who don’t want to party hard on a Friday evening, spending an evening listening to jazz is mellow and relaxing. 

Pricing: No entrance fee. 

 

Saturday:

Puppy Mill Independence Pawrade

Where/When: Maxwell Dog, 12336 Ventura Blvd., Studio City; 10 a.m.

Why Go: Hosted by the Best Friend Animal Society’s Puppy Mill Initiatives team, you and your puppy are invited to a parade that promotes pet adoption. You and your pup will get to join in a party-walk down Ventura Boulevard, starting at the Ventura/Laurel Canyon intersection and ending at Maxwell Dog where snacks, drinks, and entertainment will be available.

Superhero Summer Comic Book Giveaway at ArcLight

Where/When: ArcLight Sherman Oaks, 15301-15303 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; late morning to early afternoon.

Why Go: In honor of the new Transformers movie, Earth 2 Comics will be at the ArcLight giving out free comic books. You can also view vintage comic books, and if you’re really lucky, you may even win one to take home with you.

Sherman Oaks Community Farmers Market

Where/When: Sepulveda Boulevard and Camarillo Street; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: There’s always a great selection of produce, and on Saturday two new vendors are being added to the mix: Glen of Xtreme Desserts, who makes delicious whoopie pies; and Anthony from the Organic Soup Kitchen. This weekend the profits go to a number of shelters, so head on over and grab a bite to eat while helping others at the same time.

Houdini Tour

Where/When: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; 2:30 p.m.

Why Go: View the props Houdini used to perform his incredible feats and see contemporary artists’ response to his allure. 

Pricing: Included with museum admission. 

Galleria LIVE!: Helicopter

Where/When: Sherman Oaks Galleria, 15301-15303 Ventura Blvd.; 7-10 p.m.

Why Go: Another cover band that is participating in the Galleria’s Summer Concert Series, Helicopter appeals to all types of audiences because it covers a multitude of genres including classic and modern rock, soul, pop and dance. Helicopter incorporates the audience and is sure to create a fun-filled evening for everyone. 

Pricing: No entrance fee.

Jon Lovitz Live

Where/When: Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, 1000 Universal Studios Blvd., No. 222, Universal City; 8 p.m.

Why Go: Entertaining and hysterical, Jon Lovitz always makes everyone laugh until they can’t breathe. A great way to spend an evening.   

Pricing: $20. Ages 18 and older only.

 

Sunday:

Spellbinding Sundays

Where/When: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; 12-2 p.m.

Why Go: There is a new exhibit at the Skirball, centering around the famous magician Houdini. On Sundays, magicians appear on the grounds, performing tricks and magical fun for the whole family.

Beer Pong Tournament & Karaoke

Where/When: The Oaks Tavern, 13625 Moorpark St., Sherman Oaks; 4-6 p.m. and 9 p.m.-2 a.m.

Why Go: Since you don’t have to work Monday, why not play some beer pong, and maybe even sing a few tunes to really keep the weekend going. 

Pricing: No entrance fee. 

ABCs of SNL With Jon Lovitz

Where/When: Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, 1000 Universal Studios Blvd., No. 222, Universal City; 8 p.m.

Why Go: Entertaining and hysterical, Jon Lovitz is best known for being a cast member of Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1990, and this evening he’s going to talk about the time he spent on SNL.  

Pricing: $20. Ages 18 and older only.
