Saturday:

Kids Club: Music by Twinkle Time

Where/When: Sherman Oaks Galleria, 15301-15303 Ventura Blvd.; 11-11:30 a.m.

Why Go: From now until Aug. 13, Kids Club will host free shows for children and parents to enjoy on Saturday mornings, and there will even be prize drawings from merchants in the Galleria. Because it’s summer, a shaded area will be provided for the audience.

Sherman Oaks Community Farmers Market

Where/When: 15300 La Maida St., at Sepulveda Boulevard and Camarillo Street; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Why Go: There’s always a great selection of fresh produce and everything is reasonably priced, plus you support the local community of farmers and vendors. There’s also musical entertainment and face painting in case you decide to bring the kids along.

Cops and Cowboys 2011

Where/When: VFW Post 6885, 16208 Sierra Highway, Canyon Country; 5-11 p.m. 

Why Go: All the money raised at this event goes to the LAPD's Van Nuys Division, which serves Sherman Oaks. There will be pony rides, competitive roping, a raffle and live music throughout the evening, so be sure to buy your tickets soon, because the event is filling up.

Pricing: $50 for adults, $15 for kids 12 and under. You can purchase tickets online at midvalleypolicecouncil.org using PayPal or purchase at the door but tickets are selling quickly. For more information, contact Jean Sinatra at 818-422-2504. 

 

Houdini Tour

Where/When: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; 2:30 p.m.

Why Go: View the props Houdini used to perform his incredible feats and see contemporary artists’ response to his allure. 

Pricing: Included with museum admission. 

 

Jon Lovitz Live

Where/When: Jon Lovitz Comedy Club, 1000 Universal Studios Blvd., No. 222, Universal City; 8 and 10 p.m.

Why Go: Entertaining and hysterical, Jon Lovitz always makes everyone laugh until they can’t breathe. A great way to spend an evening indoors and out of the heat. 

Pricing: $20. Ages 18 and older only.

 

Sunday:

Spellbinding Sundays

Where/When: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; 12-2 p.m.

Why Go: A new exhibit at the Skirball centers around the famous magician Houdini. On Sundays, magicians appear on the grounds, performing tricks and magical fun for the whole family.

Chris Dawson Duo

Where/When: Vibrato, 2930 Beverly Glen Circle, Bel Air; 6:30-10:30 p.m.

Why Go: End your weekend on a high note and come see bebop pianist Chris Dawson perform. Once a 9-year-old child prodigy, Dawson started his career by playing in a Hollywood restaurant. He has worked with notable musicians such as Brian Bromberg, David Foster and Jack Sheldon, to name a few.

Beer Pong Tournament & Karaoke

Where/When: The Oaks Tavern, 13625 Moorpark St., Sherman Oaks; 4-6 p.m. and 9 p.m.-2 a.m.

Why Go: The bad news is that the weekend is ending, but the good news is that you can still go out and have a fun time with friends by singing some tunes and playing beer pong  at a local bar.   

Pricing: No entrance fee. 

 

Laser Tag

Where/When: Ultrazone, 14622 Ventura Blvd. No. 208, Sherman Oaks; 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Why Go: Stay out of the heat and dodge lasers with your friends to compete for high scores in this futuristic version of Capture the Flag.
