An interfaith panel consisting of Muslim, Christian and Jewish clergy addressed the ways that activists and people of faith can forge paths toward “peace, justice and reconciliation.” In keeping with the lead-up to the Jewish high holy days, Rabbi Laura Geller blew the shofar.
Stephen Rhode,head of the group, concluded the service by calling for members of the assembly to sign a peace pledge that the interfaith panel had handed out, committing among other things to pray and work daily for peace in one’s life and in the world. The more courageous were encouraged to agree to participate in an action of civil disobedience on Oct. 7 in downtown Los Angeles.
The program was laced with musical interludes provided by Bill Cunliffe’s band featuring vocalists Dawn Bishop and Bill Cantos. But in a celebrity surprise appearance, 70s pop star Freda Payne sang the celebrants out with a rendition of her hit song, “Bring the Boys Home,” so perfectly apropos for the sentiment of the evening.
