City Offers Free Christmas Tree Recycling

With all the work that it takes to put up a Christmas tree, no one wants to think about taking it down. However, before you take that first ornament off the tree, think about how you intend to throw it away.

The City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works hopes you will recycle it and is providing several options. Curbside collection is available for any tree as long as all decorative ornaments are removed. If the tree is too large to cut up for the green waste bin, just put the tree next to the bin on your scheduled recycling pick-up day.

The city is anxious for all residents to recycle, said Paul Gomez, a public information officer with the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works. 

“It’s obviously an important thing,” Gomez said. “We want to make sure they’re being environmentally conscious.”

Trees can also be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 8, at in the parking lot of the Los Angeles Zoo. Griffith Park is at the junction of the Golden State (5) and Ventura (Route 134) Freeways.

Trees may be dropped off for recycling that day at at 5101 N. Sepulveda Boulevard.

Before you drop off your tree, take off all the ornaments, the tinsel and garland. It is also important to remove the tree from its stand. 

In addition to recycling trees, Gomez said other items associated with the holidays, including: gift wrapping paper, cellophane, tissue paper, and bubble wrap can also be recycled.
