Caltrans began work today on $355 million project to add carpool lanes to a 2.2-mile stretch of the Golden State (5) Freeway in Burbank, improve access to Bob Hope Airport and elevate railroad tracks to prevent collisions between cars and trains.
The so-called Empire Project will add a 2.2-mile of carpool lane in each direction between Magnolia Boulevard and Buena Vista Street, according to Caltrans.
Freeway on-ramps and off-ramps will be added at Empire Avenue, and the section of Burbank Boulevard that crosses over the freeway will be rebuilt to improve airport access, according to Caltrans.
Railroad tracks that run along Empire Avenue and San Fernando Boulevard will be elevated near the airport to prevent collisions with surface-street vehicles.
The project is part of a larger, $3 billion package of 17 improvements along the freeway in Los Angeles County.
