Manuel Gutierrez, Flamenco Dancer from Sherman Oaks, stars in Kumpania, Award-Winning Documentary about L.A. Flamenco Dancers & Musicians

The Fountain Theatre and Downtown Film Festival L.A. present a screening of the award-winning documentary Kumpanía at the Fountain Theatre in Hollywood on Friday, July 19 at 8 p.m. The showing will be followed by a rare live solo concert by celebrated flamenco guitarist José Tanaka.

Kumpanía
is a Romani word meaning “people who travel the same territory.” Exploring the mysterious pull of flamenco on a group of contemporary musicians and dancers in Los Angeles, the film reveals a subculture never before seen on film. The flamencos are Gitano, Spanish, Mexican, French, Japanese and more. Together, they further this art they cannot live without: the “music of the outcasts” from 17th century Spain.

Kumpanía has previously won awards at numerous film festivals including the Madrid International Film Festival (“Audience Award Winner”); World Music & Independent Film Festival (“Best Cinematography Feature Documentary); Buffalo International Film Festival (“Audience Award Winner); On Location Memphis International Film Festival (“Best Documentary”) and Peloponnesian International Film Festival (“Best Documentary”).

Produced and directed by Katina Dunn, Kumpanía stars flamencos Antonio de Jerez, Vanessa Acosta-Abalos, Mizuho Sato, Briseyda Zarate Fernandez, Antonio Triana, Jr., José Tanaka, Gerardo Morales, Manuel Gutierrez, Kai Narezo, Joey Heredia, Timo Nuñez and Paloma Rios. Cinematography is by Avi Cohen; film editing is by Noah Berlow; the score is by Canyon Cody and Sean DwyerGnotes,” both of Granada, Spain and Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Executive producer Kevin Dunn is a veteran actor who currently appears on the HBO series VEEP.

The July 19 screening of  Kumpanía will be followed by a live solo concert by celebrated flamenco guitarist José Tanaka who also appears in the film.

The Fountain Theatre is located at 5060 Fountain Avenue (at Normandie) in Los Angeles. Admission is $40 for the Kumpanía screening/José Tanaka concert. Secure, on-site parking is available for $5.
