New Senior Lead Officer and City Council Field Deputies Meet Our Neighborhood Watch Group

New Senior Lead Officer and City Councilman's Deputies Meet Our Neighborhood Watch Group

On the night of Feb. 27, M Street Coffee hosted our M Street Neighborhood Watch's quarterly meeting where we met our new senior lead officer from LAPD, Officer Trent Berry, as well as city Councilman Tom La Bonge's field deputies, Alice Roth and Tommy Newman.

Approximately 70 people attended the meeting. It was a packed house and various neighborhood and crime issues were discussed.  Also, Channel 9 weatherman and favorite Josh Rubenstein came to discuss the Community Police Advisory Board, it's role in the community, and also to share their partnership with Map America which is the Red Cross Disaster Preparedness Plan.

According to Officer Berry, the main issues relating to crime in Sherman Oaks are burglaries of motor vehicles and occasionally homes as Sherman Oaks neighborhoods represent the perfect combination of unsuspecting humans and ownership of relatively nice possessions.

Also discussed was the Van Nuys Division's Lock It Hide it Keep It campaign, designed to remind people not to leave valuables in their car which is the main reason cars get broken into. As far as home burglaries go, 90 percent happen during the day and and many happen because people do not have adequate deadbolts, signage, alarm systems and such to deter burglars.

Neighbors also showed up to complain to Councilman LaBonge's staff on issues such as speeding traffic, overdevelopment, including concern over traffic on Coldwater stemming from the new IMT building built on Riverside.  Also, the Coldwater Street closure was discussed as well as a map providing alternate routes during the shutdown.

The meeting was organized by Alan Taylor a local Realtor who co-founded Watch2.org, a neighborhood watch advocacy group designed to help neighbors stay connected, reduce crime and boost resale values.
