Sometimes if you’re lucky you see something very special on stage. This serendipitous event took place when Christy Murphy came to the microphone at The Coffee Fix Story Salon on Friday. We’d seen Christy telling stories as part of the Wednesday night Story Salon gathering. In addition to those events, the producers provide the performers with the opportunity to extend those stories into an evening of one-person storytelling.
Christy has always possessed a lovely unassuming yet quirky stage presence. Her Irish, Filipino heritage charmed patrons as well as leaving us hysterical with a step back in time. Let’s just say she wasn’t living the “Life of Riley” in a trailer park in Florida. She was blessed with a quick-witted father who could somehow make magic out of the simple life they led.
Whether it was the authentic surgeon attire she wore at Halloween courtesy of the cleaning company her day worked for or the home made slip n’ slide he made from plastic sheeting and turtle wax, Mr. Murphy found a way to bring a smile to her face.
Her family made do with numerous wrapped presents each containing a pair of socks. She made the holidays her theme for the show starting off with a very funny original song called "A Six Pack for Santa".
There were touching tales of her siblings and the challenges of being “special” in the bright, gifted way some students are. In a moment of frustration she recalled yelling at her father that she was not pretty and had no friends. Expecting the worst for this outburst at her father she ran away only to hear him say that she was beautiful to him.
When Christy’s sister joined her on stage for a song about her deceased dad, we should have been crying but their beautiful smiles stole our hearts.
